Volunteer Spotlight – Margo

Elaine Whitford Give_Receive_Care

Margo has volunteered with The Center since 2019. She found us through a google search, wanting to give her extra time to help older adults. When she started with us, she was working part-time as a nurse and then retired fully in 2020.

Margo is a volunteer in the In-Home Connections program. She has been visiting her care receiver, Tina, since she joined us in 2019. Tina is gradually losing her eyesight and cannot drive anymore, so she wanted a visitor to come to her home for companionship.  Margo visits with Tina every other week, and they also chat on the phone between visits. Margo said she has “greatly enjoyed getting to know Tina and now considers her a friend after visiting together for four years! I always look forward to our visits.”

Tina shared that, “Margo has become such a great friend. She is so very kind and pleasant to be around. We have a great time together and enjoy each other’s company. I cannot say enough great things about her”.

When we asked Margo what advice she has for other volunteers, she said “set your boundaries and decide what works best for you and your schedule.” Margo is retired so she is able to balance her time between volunteering, being with her family, and enjoying her hobbies, like gardening, exercising, cooking, and traveling.

Margo helps The Center in other ways as well. She loves our holiday gift bag project; she donates items and delivers the bags to care receivers. She said, “I feel like Santa’s elf when I drop off the bags! The care receivers are so excited to see me!”

Margo receives joy from volunteering because it enriches her life and allows her to give back to the community. We are so grateful to have her as one of our volunteers!
