Emily discovered The Center for Volunteer Caregiving a little over two years ago while searching online for volunteer opportunities. At the time, she was missing her family and feeling a sense of guilt that many people experience when loved ones live far away. The feeling of wanting to be there to check in, but not being able to do so, stayed with her. She wanted to offer that support to someone locally, just as she would want someone to do for her own family back home. When she found The Center, she knew it would be the perfect fit.
Emily is a librarian with a deep love of books. She’s also creative and enjoys crocheting, drawing, and painting. She’s an animal lover as well and proudly considers herself both a dog and cat mom. As it turned out, she shares many of these interests with her friendly visiting match, Leigh.
Emily and Leigh have been matched for more than two years now and, over time, they’ve built a special bond. Emily visits Leigh nearly every week, spending time talking, sharing stories, and helping her with a few tasks around her apartment. They especially enjoy trying new and fun foods together.
Recently, Leigh has been facing several health challenges, and Emily has been a steady and compassionate source of support. Emily describes Leigh as “one of the funniest people” she knows and says you will almost always find them laughing together about something. They encourage one another and find ways to stay positive even during difficult times. Emily feels as though Leigh has taught her many valuable life lessons, including the importance of setting personal boundaries, investing in relationships, and prioritizing self-care.
For Emily, volunteering has been very meaningful. She feels that she is making a real difference in Leigh’s life and having a positive impact in her community. What began as just an hour a week has grown into a friendship she deeply values.
